A women’s fitness specialist sets the record straight on the outdated advice still holding women back in the gym – and in life.
Despite huge strides in women’s health, there are still far too many myths floating around about what fitness “should” look like for women. From fear of bulking up to the idea that certain workouts are for men only, these outdated beliefs are stopping women from embracing their strength, confidence and power.
Now, Lauren Baines, a certified personal trainer who left the corporate world to pursue her passion for fitness, is here to bust the five biggest myths she still hears from clients, influencers and even fitness pros.
“Women are still being sold the idea that they need to shrink themselves – physically and metaphorically,” says 33-year-old Lauren. “The truth is, strength and confidence look different on everyone. And fitness should work for you, not limit you.”
- “Lifting weights will make you bulky.”
Truth: Building serious muscle takes serious effort. What lifting actually does? It helps you sculpt, strengthen and feel super powerful. - “You need to do hours of cardio to lose weight.”
Truth: More isn’t always better. Smart training – like strength circuits or HIIT – often does more in 30 minutes than a slow jog ever could. - “You have to look a certain way to be ‘fit.’”
Truth: Fitness doesn’t have a size. It’s about how you feel in your body, not how you look in a mirror. - “If you’re not sweating buckets, it doesn’t count.”
Truth: Recovery sessions, walks and low-impact strength days are essential for results. Not every workout has to wreck you. - “You can’t start if you’re not already fit.”
Truth: Fitness isn’t a destination – it’s a process. You don’t need fancy kit, the ‘perfect body,’ or a six-pack to begin.
Lauren is on a mission to empower women to be the strongest and best versions of themselves – however that looks for them.
“Fitness should be about you – your body, your goals, your journey. Not a set of outdated rules written by someone who doesn’t understand your life.”
